January 5, 2026

Hello neighbors,

Happy New Year! I'm glad to be here with you again in 2026!

As always, please feel free to reach out to me at 7D04@anc.dc.gov if you need anything or if you'd like me to add something to this newsletter.

I'm hoping to get even more River Terrace residents signed up for the newsletter, so they can get all of the important updates I share each week. Feel free to forward this to people who might be interested and encourage them to add their email to the list here.

See you around!
Katie

Holiday Tree & Greenery Collection

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) will collect holiday trees and greenery from January 2 through February 28 from DPW-serviced households, which include single-family homes and apartment or condominium dwellings with three or fewer units. Households not serviced by DPW (e.g., larger apartment buildings) should consult their landlord or property owner for collection procedures or visit a DPW drop-off location.

Natural holiday trees and greenery take up a lot of space and should never be placed within DC’s food waste drop-off bins. Please use the curbside tree boxes and the holiday tree drop-off options below to compost all holiday trees and greenery.

Here is what you need to know about this year’s holiday tree and greenery collection:

  • Holiday trees and greenery will be collected at the curb in front of your residence.
  • When setting these items out for collection, residents should remove all ornaments, wire, tinsel, garlands, and lights. Do not place trees and greenery in bags. Only natural trees are accepted for mulching; artificial trees will not be accepted.
  • If holiday trees and greenery are not picked up 7 days after being placed curbside, residents may call 311 to make a “Christmas Tree Removal - Seasonal” service request.
  • After February 28, 2026, holiday trees and greenery should be placed at the normal point of collection for trash and recycling. Holiday trees and greenery will be collected in collection trucks as space permits.
  • Inclement weather may delay holiday tree and greenery collections.

Bicyclists Against Invasive Vines: Invasive Vine Removal on the Anacostia River Trail

Calling all trail stewards! Join the DC Trail Rangers and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network for Bicyclists Against Invasive Vines event series. On the fourth Saturday of each month we meet up at the Fields at RFK lot 6 at 10am for an ecological ride on the trail. We will be clearing invasive vines from our trees and trail corridors while exploring topics such as plant identification, invasive plant management and local wetland ecology.

Each month, we will visit trails throughout the city, tackling pesky invasive vines. This is also a great way to spend time learning how the trails connect and how to navigate them.

Free Capital Bikeshare bike rentals and helmets are available. Email us at ranger@waba.org and we’ll get you set up.
