Hello neighbors,

A few very important updates for you this week:

  1. Events DC has offered us some free tickets for community members to a Nationals game in September. I can request tickets for the Tuesday, September 1st game at 6:45 (with the September 15 game at 6:45 as a backup). In order to request the appropriate number of tickets, please respond to this email by this Saturday, August 8 indicating if you'd like to join. I can request up to 30 tickets!
  2. I also wanted to let you know about a new program called DC Rat Rangers. First, I've requested a Rat Walk through the neighborhood so we can learn from an anthrozoologist and urban rodentologist to learn about rat behavior and prevention methods. I'll let you know once that is scheduled. The second piece that you can sign up for now is a public training webinar. Once you have completed a training, DC Rat Rangers will give you tools to spread the word among friends and neighbors. Sign up for a webinar here:
  1. We're collecting signatures from River Terrace residents and neighbors in support of a community comment letter on the DC Office of Planning's Draft RFK Campus Master Plan. The full letter — covering transportation, environmental protections, housing, and enforcement — is linked in the survey. By signing, you're adding your name in support; you don't need to write anything yourself. However you ARE ENCOURAGED to also submit your own personal comments that can draw from these community comments. The letter will be submitted to OP.RFKMasterPlan@dc.gov before the August 14 deadline.

Kingman and Heritage Islands Design Meeting

Location: Dorothy I. Height/Benning Neighborhood Library (3935 Benning Road Northeast, Washington, DC 20019)
Date and time: August 5, 10 AM - 12 PM

DOEE and the design team invite you to an interactive session, where will provide an overview of the design project, summarize what we've heard through years of community engagement, and discuss how those insights are helping shape the next phase of planning.

This in-person session will focus on Access and Safety. Come share your input and help inform the future of the Islands!

DC State Fair Contests Now Open

Inspired by time-honored state fair traditions—growing and gardening, contests, and deep-fried foods—the DC State Fair honors the things that make the District of Columbia unique. Registration for the DC State Fair's contests is now open, with more than 60 to choose from. Along with classics like best pie, best honey, and best crochet, there are also new categories like best hot pepper and best outfit. Check them all out and register at https://www.dcstatefair.org/2026-contests. Contest registration will close at 11:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21 and winners will be announced at the fair on Sunday, September 6.
